"No, son, I was just a soldier" reminded me a bit of my uncle, who was not a front-line soldier, but who was training to be a radar technician in the RAF in the last years of World War II. He completed his training in 1946.
He had three medals, one of which was for crossing the Atlantic during wartime. One of his younger brothers, who worked for the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, borrowed the medals for use on a show (I think it was a radio show, but I don't know why the actual medals would be needed for a radio show...) and never returned them.
